About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead population genomic analyses across two work packages
  • Conduct comparative scans of selective sweeps across 42 butterfly species and 21 sister-species pairs
  • Quantify how often adaptive evolution is fuelled by introgressed variants and identify functional targets
  • Analyse a hybrid zone system using whole-genome resequencing and long-read sperm sequencing
  • Identify spatial population genomic signals of gene conversion and adaptive introgression
  • Work with chromosome-level reference genomes, large whole-genome sequencing datasets and high-performance computing
  • Collaborate closely with the research assistant responsible for lab work
  • Participate in fieldwork in France
  • Work with collaborators in Spain and the Czech Republic
  • Present at international conferences
  • Supervise project students
  • Join Konrad Lohse’s lab in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Edinburgh

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • PhD in evolutionary/population genomics or a related field, or PhD completion within 3 months
  • Strong skills in Python and R
  • Computational genomics and statistics skills
  • Enthusiasm for working with large genomic datasets
  • Creativity in problem solving
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Understanding of inference methods for detecting introgression and selective sweeps is desirable
  • Right to work in the UK required before employment
  • CV and cover letter required with application
