Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform ophthalmic testing, measurements, and specialty-specific procedures
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic studies, treatments, and procedures
  • Obtain and document patient histories, clinical findings, test results, and procedural data in the electronic medical record
  • Operate ophthalmic instruments, imaging systems, and specialty equipment
  • Assist physicians and care teams with examinations and procedures
  • Identify and communicate abnormal findings or technical issues
  • Prepare and maintain exam rooms, procedure areas, and equipment
  • Perform refractive evaluations, including medical history documentation, visual acuity, depth perception, color perception, retinoscopy refraction, tonometry, slit lamp assessments, intraocular pressure measurements, axial length measurements, PAM, and topography
  • Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes
  • Educate patients on refractive procedures and pre- and post-operative instructions
  • Conduct pre- and post-operative vital signs
  • Perform specialized imaging tests
  • Prepare patients for surgery
  • Order and maintain clinical supplies, OR supplies, and medications
  • Assist in elective and medically necessary laser procedures
  • Activate and deactivate lasers on J&J and Alcon platforms
  • Troubleshoot laser equipment and identify and resolve problems
  • Perform daily fluency tests and calibration assessments
  • Sterilize laser rooms, equipment, and instruments
  • Enter patient data into laser systems
  • Monitor gas supplies and change tanks when necessary
  • Document procedures in the logbook
  • Prepare surgical charts and nomographs for providers
  • Collaborate with administrative teams and providers on refractive clinical flow

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required
  • BLS certification required
  • Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment
  • Proficiency using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of eye anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of eye disease and systemic diseases that affect the eye
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic equipment, proper care and usage
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written
  • Laser training through the vendor (J&J and/or Alcon)
  • Imaging training supporting lasers (J&J and/or Alcon)
  • Scrub training completed through the Bascom Palmer Nurse Clinical Education Department
  • Annual competencies and yearly laser safety CBL certification training
