About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage IceCube computing facilities and services, primarily at UW-Madison
- Provide timely access to data and computing services for the IceCube Collaboration
- Lead a team of eight to ten IT professionals
- Ensure the integrity and availability of IceCube data
- Manage operations, upgrade plans, and improvements for computing infrastructure at UW-Madison and the South Pole, including hardware and middleware services
- Coordinate distributed computing infrastructure with collaboration partners to maximize usage and efficiency
- Work with user group leads to track computing requirements and develop operational plans
- Pursue research and development in large-scale scientific computing
- Identify opportunities to reduce annual operating costs while maintaining reliability and performance
- Report performance and usage of IceCube computing services to the collaboration and NSF
- Work with the IceCube Software and Computing Advisory Panel
- Provide computing, storage, networking, and security support for WIPAC researchers and associated experiments
- Advise leadership on cyberinfrastructure topics and participate in institution-wide IT and research computing initiatives
- Direct technical aspects of cyberinfrastructure projects and contribute to research computing, data science, and CI proposals
- Plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy, and evaluate complex research computing systems and workflows
- Contribute to research and CI policy development
- Prepare project status and technical research reports for professional organizations, sponsors, review boards, and design reviews
- Exercise supervisory authority over at least 2.0 FTE employees
- Coordinate technically with internal and external stakeholders
- Manage research and technical staff providing CI resources and support
- Direct the design, implementation, and recommendation of new hardware and software technologies
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of hands-on and strategic IT experience
- Experience leading and mentoring a team of computing and/or software professionals
- Proven ability to collaborate across multi-institutional scientific or academic collaborations
- Hands-on background in and high-level architectural oversight of distributed High Throughput Computing and storage services for large data sets
- Experience coordinating access and operations across remote and/or distributed computing centers
- Experience summarizing performance, requirements, and operational plans in reports for internal leadership and/or federal grant sponsors such as NSF
- Experience presenting infrastructure strategies at conferences or through publications
- Master's degree or higher required in Physics, Computer Science or related field
- Ability to guide long-term technical direction with non-technical decision-makers, faculty, and external partners
- Understanding of scientific data formats and large-scale data analysis techniques
- Experience integrating and orchestrating workloads across partner clusters, commercial clouds (IaaS), and external supercomputing centers
- Familiarity with cybersecurity standards, threat mitigation, and compliance policies in distributed scientific environments
