About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide strategic leadership to business partners across Unum Group
- Direct activities and influence business decisions and outcomes
- Manage and develop highly technical tax staff
- Develop, implement, and enforce tax policies and procedures
- Lead financial analysis supporting business decisions
- Build cross-functional partnerships across the global enterprise
- Lead change management and transformation initiatives
- Coach and mentor team members and build organizational bench strength
- Lead day-to-day corporate income tax staff activities
- Manage hiring, performance management, talent development, and compensation decisions
- Support quarterly and annual tax accounting and reporting
- Lead income tax expense forecasting for financial plans and forecasts
- Partner with finance, business planning, and business lines on US GAAP and statutory tax forecasting
- Provide tax insights, guidance, strategy, and training to internal and external customers
- Develop tax technology strategies and a tax technology roadmap
- Partner with IT and Finance on accounting system procedures and tax-rule compliance
- Research, monitor, and interpret federal and state income tax statutes and legislative activity
- Advise tax management and staff on federal and state taxation developments
- Explain and defend the Company’s tax positions to executives, auditors, and regulators
- Develop strategies to maximize tax deductions for Unum subsidiaries
- Mitigate and document tax risks and Sarbanes-Oxley tax controls
- Lead or support IRS audits of federal consolidated income tax returns
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree and CPA with public accounting experience or equivalent experience in corporate tax department of large corporation, including insurance and/or corporate tax with significant work experience
- Master’s degree in taxation or JD preferred
- Comprehensive knowledge of income tax management at practical and policy levels
- Technical skills required to support income tax management
- Proficiency with ERP and tax applications
- In-depth understanding and application of financial services and/or insurance sector accounting preferred
- Strong negotiation and partnership skills across all levels of management
- Ability to influence and challenge decisions and processes
- Ability to frame issues, options, and solutions using financial data for business decision-making
- Experience navigating change with individuals and teams
- Experience working with senior management and external contacts
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, detailed, deadline-oriented environment while balancing multiple priorities and resources
- Excellent conflict resolution and facilitation skills
- Strong conceptual thinking
- Must have and maintain a strong foundation in accounting for income taxes under US GAAP and statutory accounting bases
