About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide expert medical analysis of claims files or underwriting applications across Unum US product lines
  • Provide high quality, timely, and efficient medical consultative services to the Benefits Center
  • Provide timely, clear medical direction and opinions to team partners, with reasoned forensic analysis
  • Partner and consult with fellow medical consultants to complete whole person analysis
  • Assess medical and other data to determine functional capacity, diagnosis accuracy, treatment plans, duration guidelines and prognosis
  • Provide relevant medical education and knowledge to others
  • Contact insureds’ healthcare providers by telephone to gather medical information and understand claimants’ functional abilities
  • Make timely referrals for second opinion reviews when appropriate or required
  • Manage and complete high volumes of assigned work while maintaining turnaround times
  • Monitor team/group work volumes to support organizational success
  • Receive feedback and follow through with appropriate actions
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Interact regularly with business partners, healthcare providers and specialized resources

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Professional Degree (MD, DO, PhD, PsyD)
  • Active, unrestricted US medical license
  • Board certification required for physicians in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), Internal Medicine, Occupational Medicine or Family Practice
  • Minimum of five years of clinical experience in medical specialty
  • Strong team and collaborative skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, team based, corporate environment
  • Ability to mentor others and give and receive constructive, behaviorally based feedback with peers and partners
  • Maintain professional licenses and Board certifications
  • Physicians and psychologists must conduct reviews and analyses within appropriate ethical standards
