About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Abstract and assign valid CPT, ICD-10, HCPCs, and modifiers for appropriate reimbursement
- Identify compliance concerns, trends, and education opportunities related to coding, documentation, and billing accuracy
- Work independently with limited oversight and seek direction on complex cases
- Code surgical procedures according to surgical coding guidelines and properly apply modifiers
- Abstract service documentation and enter appropriate codes into billing systems
- Identify and communicate deficiencies affecting the billing process
- Complete encounters in the coding work queue or reports in a timely manner
- Review and resolve denials
- Ensure documentation meets current EM Guidelines for Providers
- Ensure compliance with CMS Teaching Physician Rules and UofL Health policies before billing
- Ensure Advanced Practice Provider documentation meets payer-specific rules
- Provide comments and suggestions regarding weaknesses identified in coding reviews
- Report trending deficiencies to the Senior Manager and Compliance Educator
- Assist the Coder Lead or Supervisor with training and mentoring staff
- Communicate with providers, practice management, and stakeholders verbally and in writing
- Meet or exceed coding production and quality standards
- Participate in special projects and complete assigned duties
- Develop daily/weekly communication with office managers, departments, and providers
- Respond to questions from managers, providers, departments, and representatives
- Maintain coding, company policy, HIPAA, confidentiality, safety, and conduct compliance
- Demonstrate customer service and collaborate with physicians, patients, residents, visitors, staff, and the broader health care community
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or GED/equivalent (required)
- Three (3) years of coding experience (required)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) accredited by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) (required)
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialists Based (CCS-P) accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) (required)
- Advanced knowledge of medical codes involving ICD 10, CPT, HCPC, and IHS coding conventions
- Understanding and application of regulatory changes and coding updates, including NCCI and MUE edits
- Advanced working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, disease process and medical terminology
- Advanced knowledge of official coding conventions and rules established by AMA and CMS
- Ability to work independently with little oversight
- Effective professional communication skills
- Proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition
- Ability to solve practical problems and interpret varied instructions
- Proficiency with Microsoft, Google Chrome, Internet navigation, and database management
- Ability to adapt to new technologies
- Ability to work within a team environment and meet monthly goals
- Compliance with HIPAA privacy and security requirements
