About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Abstract and analyze medical documentation
  • Assign appropriate procedural terminology and medical codes according to coding rules and policies
  • Analyze, enter, and manipulate databases
  • Respond to and clarify internal requests for medical information
  • Review codes created by electronic charge capture and assign ICD-10-CM, E/M, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier codes
  • Review and resolve coding denials
  • Resolve claims errors related to improper coding and provide correction and follow-up feedback
  • Abstract data and review codes for accuracy
  • Perform system edit checks and correct errors
  • Respond to coding information requests
  • Communicate documentation improvement opportunities and coding issues to providers, departments, and designated leaders
  • Consult internal customers and external vendors for clarification of inconsistent or incomplete documentation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year Medical Coder experience required
  • Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or health related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted
  • Knowledge of ICD-10CM, CPT and HCPSC required
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy required
  • AHIMA RHIA, RHIT, or CCS accreditation preferred
  • CPC from AAPC or CMC from Practice Management Institute preferred
