About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead audience engagement strategy for USA TODAY news, economy and lifestyles coverage
Develop strategies, workflows and best practices to drive audience growth and discoverability across social, newsletters, emerging platforms and search
Monitor platform, social, newsletter and alert analytics and translate data into action steps for journalists
Lead audience planning for major events, tentpoles and breaking news
Determine how journalism should be packaged, distributed and presented throughout the audience journey
Create, edit or optimize audience-focused content during major events and breaking news
Partner crossdivisionally on monetization and audience growth efforts across social media and distributed platforms
Manage a team of content creators and ensure consistent brand strategy, voice and execution across platforms
Create and monitor reporting and KPI progress for loyalty, engagement, relevance and other business goals
Monitor creator-industry trends and translate relevant tactics into newsroom strategies
Introduce new ideas, improve established practices and help colleagues adapt to changing audience behavior
Collaborate with the USA TODAY audience team, newsroom leadership, journalists and organizational partners

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
At least 5 years of newsroom experience, including management, preferably in an audience development role at a digitally-focused media organization
Journalism experience is mandatory
Proven passion and experience with storytelling via social media, search and newsletters
Expertise in platforms such as Reddit, Discord, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and Threads
Experience using Google Analytics and Parse.ly or similar tools
Expertise in platform-specific data tools such as Meta, TikTok, Reddit and Salesforce
Experience with third-party distribution tools like Hootsuite, True Anthem and Echobox preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Familiarity with news products and journalism, and understanding of media analytics and ethics
Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks independently
Willingness to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly, when news requires it
