About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide legal counsel to business unit leadership by identifying and analyzing legal issues and delivering practical, effective legal advice
- Engage proactively with business clients to understand USAA’s strategic and operational objectives
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders across business units and Legal & Advisory Services
- Handle pre-litigation insurance coverage matters for personal lines
- Analyze complex coverage issues
- Draft coverage opinions and reservation of rights letters
- Support business objectives and mitigate regulatory, compliance, and litigation risk
- Lead complex legal assignments with significant business impact and deliver appropriate solutions
- Communicate legal positions clearly and concisely to stakeholders and varying levels of leadership
- Monitor and analyze changes in laws, regulations, industry developments, and insurance regulatory guidance
- Collaborate across USAA and the Chief Legal Office to mitigate risk
- Work with outside counsel or contract professionals
- Assist more senior attorneys on highly complex matters
- Escalate significant-risk matters to more senior attorneys
- Serve as a resource to less experienced team members
- Identify, measure, monitor, and control risks in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one state or a territory of the USA
- 6 years of relevant experience, including at least 4 years of experience as a practicing attorney
- Ability to communicate legal advice effectively to business partners
- Experience at a law firm or as in-house counsel handling insurance coverage matters
- Experience preparing coverage analyses, coverage opinions, and reservation of rights letters
- Working knowledge of state insurance laws, compliance requirements, DOI guidance, and regulatory timelines
- Experience monitoring and interpreting insurance regulatory and industry developments, including NAIC updates and related publications
- US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner
- Must not require immigration support or visa sponsorship, including H-1B, TN, or STEM OPT Training Plans
