About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide technical leadership for the organization's security logging, telemetry, and SIEM strategy
  • Ensure high-quality data supports monitoring, detection, and response activities
  • Partner with application owners, infrastructure teams, and security engineers to onboard data sources
  • Optimize data pipelines and improve data quality, normalization, and parsing
  • Drive the evolution of security telemetry capabilities for advanced analytics, automation, threat hunting, and future-state security operations
  • Serve as a system engineer and solution architect for large, complex systems or networks
  • Manage vulnerabilities and reduce risks of system or asset compromises
  • Lead scalable security solution design across multiple domains and portfolios
  • Create and enforce implementation patterns aligned with technical architecture
  • Execute complex implementations as a subject matter expert across multiple domains
  • Lead cross-functional, matrixed delivery teams solving complex security engineering problems
  • Analyze trends, news, and changes in the threat and compliance environment
  • Interface with auditors, external regulators, and external suppliers
  • Advise senior executives and architects on security engineering risk and compliance issues
  • Own security engineering decisions across USAA
  • Build prototypes and proofs of concept for emerging security technologies
  • Translate business, security, and engineering objectives into achievable controls
  • Develop and oversee technical implementation of security controls
  • Identify, measure, monitor, and control risks in accordance with risk and compliance policies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience
  • 8 years of related experience in Security Engineering and/or Information Technology in a large organization, major consulting firm, or US military
  • Expert level security consulting skills in delivering modern security infrastructure solutions, new applications of technology, and Information Technology business models
  • Advanced knowledge of emerging and/or evolving security technologies
  • Mastery of complex system and environment analysis, design, optimization, and hardening
  • Subject matter expert knowledge of Information Security and/or Cybersecurity theories, techniques and/or technologies
  • Exceptional relationship management, collaboration, communication, and high-trust relationship-building skills across all organizational levels
  • Extensive experience explaining and influencing complex technology decisions to technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Deep expertise in SIEM platforms such as Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, Google SecOps, Elastic, or QRadar, or leveraging a Datalake such as Snowflake or Databricks for security logging
  • Experience designing and optimizing large-scale security monitoring and analytics environments
  • Strong background in security telemetry engineering, including log collection, normalization, enrichment, parsing, and data quality management
  • Experience across cloud, on-premises, application, identity, and endpoint data sources
  • Experience building and maintaining scalable data pipelines using Kafka, Cribl, Kinesis, Event Hubs, Data Lake architectures, cloud-native services, or similar platforms
  • Advanced knowledge of security operations, threat detection engineering, threat hunting, incident response, and MITRE ATT&CK
  • Proficiency in scripting, automation, and data analysis using Python, PowerShell, SQL, or similar technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional engineering initiatives and influence technical strategy
  • Must not require immigration support or visa sponsorship now or in the future
