About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage coding and chart documentation-training programs.
- Ensure consistent and accurate ICD-10 coding by Health Information Management Coders.
- Work with medical staff, coders, and Valley Medical Group staff on documentation best practices.
- Develop, implement, deliver, and assess coding education plans using a variety of methods for individual providers or provider groups.
- Research and analyze data, draw conclusions, and resolve coding and documentation issues.
- Collaborate with coding staff, practice administrators, and physicians to determine team needs and prioritize workflow.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associates Degree in a health or business related field is strongly recommended.
- Successful completion of a post-secondary billing or coding program or coursework, or the equivalent combination of experience, education
- Five (5) years of progressive coding experience in a medical group practice setting, with coding/billing experience in multiple medical specialties.
- Surgical and outpatient procedural coding is required.
- Experience using medical billing software and electronic medical records is required.
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease process, and surgical procedures.
- Knowledge of accepted medical abbreviations and their meanings.
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS, medical dictionaries and texts, and medical journals.
- Adherence to official coding and compliance guidelines and Ethical Coding standards.
- Ability to function within a predetermined schedule and meet deadlines consistently.
- Ability to work collaboratively with coding staff, practice administrators and physicians.
- Organizational skills, self-motivation, and ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Ability to research and analyze data, draw conclusions, resolve issues, and interpret policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret medical procedures and terminology.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Medical Terminology coursework required.
- Anatomy & Physiology or Pathophysiology required.
- Ability to assign, sequence and validate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes with appropriate modifier usage.
- Working knowledge of CCI edits and other regulatory guidance.
- Ability to develop, implement, deliver, and assess coding education plans.
- Understanding of healthcare insurance guidelines relevant to correct coding initiatives.
- Advanced reading, writing and oral communication skills.
