Key responsibilities & impact
  • Create, write, and edit content for newsletters, alumni magazine, news announcements, website, social media, press releases, advertisements, internal communications, and email correspondence
  • Write and edit editorial copy for current and prospective students, alumni, faculty, staff, nursing professionals, media, and other audiences
  • Interview faculty, staff, students, and alumni and write compelling profiles
  • Research and write news articles for digital and print publication
  • Attend lectures and events to report on stories
  • Ensure communications reflect the school's brand, mission, values, goals, and priorities
  • Apply Vanderbilt University and Associated Press style guides
  • Fact-check, proofread, and correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, word usage, copy, art, and design
  • Contribute to social media content and identify relevant stories and news
  • Identify and implement new social media strategies
  • Support management of social media accounts
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships throughout the school and university
  • Collaborate with campus partners and external stakeholders to support strategic communications and marketing objectives

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of three years of experience in advertising, communications, marketing, media, journalism, public relations, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative ability to find and tell compelling stories across formats
  • Ability to think comprehensively about communications strategies and broader organizational goals
  • Comfortable going in person to investigate and interview faculty, students, and upper administration
  • Excellent news judgment and proofreading skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to collaborate, take direction, and work independently
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours when required
  • Work samples and references required
  • Candidates interviewed may be required to complete writing and proofreading tests
