About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide safe, direct patient care with age-appropriate adjustments
- Monitor patient conditions and update the healthcare team
- Provide direct and indirect care for patients with and without medical/surgical complications
- Meet patients’ comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs
- Deliver care according to nursing and medical plans of care and VCUHS policies and procedures
- Maintain a safe, clean, stocked clinical environment
- Maintain supplies, educational materials, equipment, sterilized supplies and instruments, and the care environment
- Accurately identify patients and observe safety goals
- Report patients’ physical and mental responses, incidents, or threats of harm to licensed practitioners, managers, and Registered Nurses
- Obtain and record admissions data, vital signs, height and weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, intake and output, calorie counts, and other patient information
- Obtain or assist with collecting specimens for diagnostic or waived tests
- Participate in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives
- Establish courteous and effective rapport with patients, visitors, coworkers, and healthcare team members
- Perform other assigned duties
- Provide equitable, age-appropriate care to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Degree or equivalent
- AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
- Certification/completion of one of the following: Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Military Corpsmen/Medic, or Nursing Aide Training Program
- Experience within a healthcare environment OR completion of foundations/clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation
- Knowledge of patient data collection and documentation, including vital signs, intake/output, and changes in patient condition
- Knowledge of basic hygiene and activities of daily living care
- Ability to assist with feeding, hydration, and nutrition
- Ability to assist with ambulation and patient mobility
- Ability to provide safe, compassionate care
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment as needed
- Ability to perform shift work and maneuver patient weight
- Acute care experience as a nursing assistant or aide preferred
- Ability to meet physical requirements including lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling 0–100 lbs, climbing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, balancing, bending, sitting, walking, and standing
- Manual dexterity, eye/hand coordination, hearing alarms, reaching above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, and finger dexterity
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking
- Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, and frequent change

- Must attend mandatory in-services and trainings and complete online training requirements
