About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide safe and effective respiratory care for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations
  • Serve as a respiratory care resource and educator for patients, caregivers, hospital staff and students
  • Set up, monitor, transport and maintain mechanical ventilation equipment, including CPAP and BiPAP
  • Perform respiratory care assessments, interventions, teaching and handoffs, including volume expansion, airway clearance, inhaled medications, airway care, intubation when applicable and medical gas administration
  • Comply with local, state and federal laws, regulations, Joint Commission standards, credentialing/licensure requirements and VCUHS policies
  • Document equipment and patient assessments, consultations, ordered therapies, interventions, plans of care, charges and time worked
  • Perform or assist with blood gas sampling and analysis, pressure-volume measurements, peak flow measurements, simple spirometry and bronchoscopy assistance
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility in use of VCUHS resources
  • Participate in quality improvement, continuing education, annual recertification and research opportunities
  • Provide labor and delivery assistance when assigned
  • Perform external critical care transports for critically ill neonatal/pediatric patients when assigned
  • Serve as shift team leader in the supervisor’s absence or as Resource Therapist for the assigned shift
  • Perform other duties and special projects and assist team members

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Education, training and/or experience satisfying eligibility requirements for the National Board for Respiratory Care or predecessor organizations
  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Respiratory Therapist
  • Current NBRC registry as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT); CRT grandfathering applies to eligible employees hired before 1/1/2015
  • Current CPR certification as required by practice setting
  • New hires on or after 1/1/2015 must be current RRT
  • New graduate or prior work experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Basic computer skills
  • Working knowledge of common critical care equipment
  • Cardiopulmonary assessment and monitoring, airway care, ventilator selection and parameter management
  • Ability to consult with physicians and interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care plans
  • Ability to rotate shifts and work weekends and holidays depending on assignment
  • Ability to perform required physical demands, including lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, stooping, kneeling, squatting, balancing and bending
  • Manual dexterity, patient maneuvering, alarm/telephone hearing, color vision and repetitive arm/hand movements
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, clear speech, legible writing, reading and logical thinking
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent/intense customer interactions and frequent change
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program preferred
  • Previous affiliation or work experience in a similar practice setting preferred
  • Current ACLS/PALS preferred
