About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in residential settings
  • Help individuals build independence, self-advocacy, community integration, friendships, and quality of life
  • Facilitate access to community-based supports, resources, assistive technology, and adaptive equipment
  • Plan recreational and social activities promoting social inclusion and emotional well-being
  • Support work, volunteer, and other community engagement opportunities
  • Provide training and support in rehabilitative and behavioral interventions, fire and safety, appointments, money management, activities of daily living, shopping, meal planning, cooking, and household chores
  • Perform hands-on tasks to implement support plans
  • Provide transportation for outings, appointments, and community activities
  • Assess physical and emotional status and report changes to the supervisor
  • Monitor individual funds and maintain records, progress notes, behavior and academic data, incident documentation, communication logs, and activity schedules
  • Procure, store, administer, document, and dispose of medication according to MAP requirements and applicable regulations
  • Communicate with program nurses, case managers, Visiting Nurses Association, families, and other interested parties
  • Participate in mandated training and staff meetings
  • Ensure compliance with internal and external policies, procedures, regulations, and standards
  • Maintain home safety and perform housekeeping, snow shoveling, and trash removal
  • Provide shift coverage in other homes or programs as assigned
  • Function as a human rights advocate and provide physical intervention or First Aid during emergencies
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and documenting treatment plans, ISP/PSTPs, and clinical programs
  • Report as required to the Disabled Persons Protections Commission and perform other related duties

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience working with people with developmental disabilities and/or brain injury strongly preferred
  • Strong time management and writing skills
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Current, valid US driver's license held for at least 6 months; posting also states at least one year in the driving requirements section
  • Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 2 weeks of employment
  • Must obtain MAP certification within 150 days of employment
  • Must successfully complete Safety Care within 90 days
  • Must obtain PBS Tier 1 certification within 150 days of hire
  • Must successfully pass CORI, reference, national fingerprinting, and driving record checks
  • Ability to maintain adequate insurance and a safe driving record when using a personal vehicle
  • Knowledge and use of advocacy, empowerment, self-advocacy, communication, participatory planning, crisis intervention, household management, and physical personal management techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats
  • Ability to assist with physically active duties, lift at least 25 pounds, and perform routine living activities
  • Ability to operate a computer and office equipment
  • Ability to speak, hear, and communicate with clients, staff, and external representatives
