About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Explain program rules and regulations to residents and facilitate observance of the rules
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, bed and sleeping assignments, showers, laundering, and other daily routines
  • Provide awake-shift coverage and maintain an engaging presence and ground security
  • Conduct regular wellness, safety, sanitation, and hourly security checks as designated
  • Maintain daily, shift, observation, and incident reports
  • Perform housekeeping, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, room, dorm, and staff-area preparation tasks
  • Respond to participant questions and concerns
  • Perform clerical duties including telephone answering, email correspondence, computer applications, message recording, mail sorting, and filing
  • Coordinate, inventory, store, and provide participant property; post removal notices for unattended belongings
  • Maintain linen documentation, inventory control, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, equipment, and supplies
  • Document and report client concerns and infractions affecting program security
  • De-escalate crises and respond appropriately to emergencies
  • Communicate with on-site staff, managers, service providers, and county/state/city representatives
  • Assist with training and development of new staff and identify ongoing training needs
  • Support fire, safety, health, ethical, confidentiality, and operational standards
  • Assist participants in the boutique with clothing and personal items; sort, organize, restock, and document donations
  • Support inclement-weather overflow and warming-center operations
  • Support VOA staff and Washoe County case management staff with participant development
  • Role-model positive behavior and support residents toward self-sufficiency
  • Attend staff meetings and assigned training and complete required certifications

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions
  • Ability to provide services to participants without ethnic or social prejudices
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, families in crisis, young adults, minorities, and persons with disabilities
  • Ability to utilize a range of interventions to work with participants with varying needs and levels of functioning
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours
  • Ability to function as a team member
  • Computer skills required
  • CPR and First Aid training within ninety (90) days of employment, with re-certification as necessary
  • Must undergo a criminal background check

  • Ability to de-escalate crisis situations and assist residents and staff in emergency situations

  • Lift and move up to 30 pounds
  • Physically able to safely maneuver the weight distribution of a client in an emergency situation

  • Ability to maneuver quickly in emergency situations to assist clients as needed
