About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead decomposition of a large controller-centric Spring Boot service into bounded domain services with an incremental migration plan
  • Lead platform engineering through scalable infrastructure, reusable tooling, and cloud-native architectures
  • Manage the full software development lifecycle across multiple teams, including coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and incident response
  • Architect and implement AI-enhanced applications and intelligent systems for real-time data processing
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship and influence architectural decisions
  • Translate business needs into technical requirements and measurable success metrics
  • Own Compass platform API architecture, service boundaries, caching, data stores, and resilience, including multi-region active/active and disaster recovery
  • Design multi-tenant capabilities for new chains and formats
  • Build and review Java backend, React/TypeScript/Node web, and Kotlin/Swift mobile SDK code
  • Drive Kafka scale and performance, API latency, cache strategy, and BigQuery data-pipeline cost optimization
  • Partner with product, vendors, and partner-app teams on SDK contracts, SLAs, rollout plans, and incident response
  • Improve observability, alerting, canary deployments, runbooks, change-management discipline, and on-call health
  • Support Walmart’s platform evolution and operational excellence for millions of customers and associates
  • Develop mGPS/Compass indoor-positioning and routing technology that improves in-store operational efficiency

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area; or 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
  • 10+ years building and operating production distributed systems
  • Deep Java, Spring Boot 3.x, Java 17/21, REST API design, PostgreSQL, and JPA experience
  • Strong TypeScript/Node.js and React experience, including server-side rendering/SPA tradeoffs
  • Kafka producers/consumers, partitioning, DLQ/retry, and idempotency
  • BigQuery/SQL, Airflow, and Spark/Dataproc-style batch pipeline fundamentals
  • Kubernetes, CI/CD, canary/progressive delivery, secrets management, and observability
  • Experience leading architecture across teams, writing ADRs, and mentoring engineers
  • Multi-region active/active and disaster recovery design experience
  • Unit, functional, integration, end-to-end, contract, and load testing experience
  • Hands-on Kotlin/Android and/or Swift/iOS mobile SDK experience, including public API/versioning discipline
  • OpenSearch/Elasticsearch and distributed caching experience
  • Experience owning change management / CRQ-governed releases
  • Experience with model-driven design and AI agents
  • Strong problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and stakeholder-management abilities
