About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as a hands-on technical authority and trusted advisor for Walmart+ engineering teams
  • Lead discovery, technical strategy, and solution design for complex membership, engagement, benefits, personalization, and omnichannel initiatives
  • Define and evolve scalable, resilient, and secure architectures for distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven platforms
  • Translate business objectives and customer needs into technical strategies, roadmaps, milestones, and measurable engineering outcomes
  • Drive architecture decisions balancing customer value, quality, cost, delivery timelines, maintainability, and platform evolution
  • Design and review systems using Java, Spring Boot, Node.js, Kafka, NoSQL databases, and cloud-native technologies
  • Lead design reviews, technical deep dives, code reviews, and architecture discussions
  • Establish coding standards, design patterns, testing strategies, observability practices, and secure software development principles
  • Contribute to critical code, prototypes, proof-of-concepts, technical spikes, and production problem resolution
  • Ensure reliability through telemetry, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, performance engineering, disaster recovery, and operational readiness
  • Drive automation, CI/CD, DevOps practices, continuous delivery, and developer productivity improvements
  • Partner with Product Management, UX/UI, Quality Engineering, SRE, DevOps, Security, Data, and Architecture teams
  • Create technical documentation, architecture decision records, diagrams, presentations, and implementation guidance
  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leads and foster learning and innovation
  • Influence technical standards and reusable patterns across Walmart+ and Walmart Global Tech
  • Research emerging technologies, including agentic AI use cases
  • Participate in hiring, technical assessments, hackathons, demo days, and architecture forums
  • Provide technical leadership during production incidents and drive durable corrective actions

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area; or 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
  • Typically 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on building and operating large-scale distributed systems
  • Demonstrated experience as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, Lead Engineer, Architect, or equivalent technical leadership role
  • Extensive hands-on experience designing, developing, and delivering software products and platforms with a large user base
  • Advanced knowledge of software design, distributed systems, microservices architecture, event-driven architecture, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, and performance engineering
  • Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot; experience with Node.js and JavaScript/TypeScript is highly desirable
  • Deep experience with Kafka or comparable event-streaming technologies
  • Experience with NoSQL databases and data modeling, consistency, availability, partitioning, replication, and scalability trade-offs
  • Experience building cloud-native services on Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform
  • Strong understanding of DevOps and CI/CD practices, Git, Maven or comparable build tools, automated testing, release management, and infrastructure automation
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm
  • Excellent debugging, performance analysis, production support, and incident-management skills
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, distributed tracing, structured logging, and service-level indicators
  • Ability to influence without direct authority and align multiple teams around a technical direction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to balance competing priorities
  • Experience working with global, geographically distributed teams and products
  • Risk analysis and trade-off methodologies, coding standards, secure coding practices, software design principles, and development guidelines
  • Knowledge of PCI and other applicable compliance requirements
  • Knowledge of telemetry, observability, service health, capacity management, and operational readiness
  • Knowledge of Secure Software Development Lifecycle frameworks, tools, and controls
