About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead technically through architecture discussions, design reviews, and critical technical decisions
- Own and drive end-to-end technical design of scalable, reliable, and maintainable services and platforms
- Mentor and grow engineers through code reviews, design critiques, and engineering deep-dives
- Identify and resolve technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks
- Set and enforce standards for code quality, test coverage, observability, and operational excellence
- Drive adoption of distributed-systems patterns including event-driven architecture, eventual consistency, and resilient service mesh
- Engineer systems for resilience in low-bandwidth, high-latency environments
- Attract, hire, and retain strong individual contributors and build an engineering-excellence culture
- Evaluate and champion technology choices for long-term platform health
- Ensure delivery with pace, quality, and engineering depth
- Build scalable, cloud-native platforms powering Walmart retail and eCommerce experiences across Africa
- Own systems supporting omni-channel commerce, supply chain, customer returns, and fulfilment
Requirements
What you’ll need- 12+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
- Strong and current command of backend system design and development
- Deep proficiency in Java and Spring/Spring Boot
- Expert-level understanding of distributed systems, CAP theorem trade-offs, consistency models, idempotency, distributed transactions, and failure modes
- Strong working knowledge of event-driven architecture, Kafka or equivalent message streaming platforms, saga patterns, CQRS, and event sourcing
- Extensive experience with cloud-native microservices on Microsoft Azure, including AKS, Azure Service Bus, Azure Functions, and Cosmos DB
- Solid grasp of API design at scale, RESTful services, versioning, backward compatibility, and contract-first design
- Hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
- Deep understanding of observability, including OpenTelemetry, structured logging, alerting, SLOs/SLAs, and incident post-mortems
- Strong command of non-functional requirements including latency, throughput, fault tolerance, horizontal scalability, and graceful degradation
- Proven ability to prototype and validate technical solutions by writing production code
- Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git branching strategies, pipeline-as-code, artifact management, and blue-green or canary deployments
- Practical experience with Kubernetes at scale, Helm, resource quotas, pod disruption budgets, and production-grade cluster management
- Strong knowledge of code quality practices, SonarQube, JUnit, Spock, mutation testing, and test pyramid discipline
- Strong experience leveraging AI/LLM in production and deriving measurable outcomes
- Experience with AI-driven feature development and an AI-first mindset
- 3+ years managing engineering teams of 10–15 engineers
- Track record of raising technical standards through architecture review processes, engineering guilds, or design standards
- Experience leading greenfield platform builds and large-scale migrations
- Ability to translate ambiguous business problems into technical problem statements and executable engineering plans
- Ability to unblock engineers technically and make decisive technical judgments
- Experience working in distributed, multi-time-zone engineering organizations
- Minimum qualification alternative: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 5 years' software engineering experience, or 7 years' software engineering experience plus 2 years' supervisory experience
- Preferred: Master's degree and 3 years' software engineering experience
- Nice to have: retail or supply chain domain exposure; low-bandwidth or intermittent-connectivity engineering experience; familiarity with WCNP or equivalent internal PaaS tooling
