About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and operate a large-scale internal platform providing real-time streaming, messaging, telemetry, and data-processing capabilities
  • Drive design, development, implementation, and documentation
  • Build, test, and deploy scalable solutions impacting Walmart associates worldwide
  • Collaborate with Walmart engineering teams across geographies
  • Engage with Product Management and Business to set priorities and deliver products
  • Design and build enhanced processes and technical solutions supporting strategic initiatives
  • Work with architects and cross-functional teams to deliver solutions meeting Quality, Cost, and Delivery standards
  • Work with senior leadership to define product roadmaps
  • Participate in hiring and build high-performing agile teams
  • Gather requirements from business owners and technical teams in India and globally
  • Define designs and overall architecture for highly scalable, robust solutions
  • Create high-level and low-level designs, lead design discussions, and make technical decisions
  • Establish quality, best practices, and non-functional standards and guide teams in execution
  • Implement models and algorithms operating on massive datasets
  • Contribute to and leverage open-source technologies at global scale
  • Lead the design and evolution of Control Plane and Data Plane architecture for real-time feature serving
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to the engineering community

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum qualification: Bachelor’s degree in a specified related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area, OR 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong track record in building and operating large-scale distributed systems
  • Strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and design patterns
  • Experience owning technical debt and technology modernization
  • Hands-on experience with microservices and RESTful web services development in Java/Spring Boot
  • Knowledge of messaging systems such as Kafka and RabbitMQ
  • Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Demonstrated technical leadership driving architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and delivering complex cross-team projects
  • Expertise in distributed systems design, including high-availability architectures, data consistency, fault tolerance, and horizontal scalability
  • Strong proficiency in Java and/or Python
  • Experience building production-grade SDKs, APIs, or platform services strongly preferred
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure on GCP and/or Azure
  • Experience with Cassandra, BigTable, Redis, BigQuery, Hive, and GCS at scale
  • Familiarity with streaming and batch data pipelines using Kafka, Spark Streaming, or Airflow
  • Strong understanding of MLOps principles, including feature engineering, model training pipelines, real-time inference, and ML lifecycle management
  • Experience with Kubernetes and container-based microservices architectures
  • Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of at least one cloud-based project
  • Ability to balance long-term and short-term design implications
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation, facilitation, consensus building, influencing, and persuading
  • Experience mentoring/coaching senior and other engineers
  • Experience with Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or similar observability stacks
  • Apache Feast
  • Preferred qualification: Master’s degree in a specified related area and 2 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
