About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Define the direction and evolve backend microservices, data pipelines, and ML-serving infrastructure powering search at scale
  • Lead a team of 6–10 engineers
  • Set technical vision for critical systems and drive the quality bar
  • Write and review code, lead design discussions, and make architectural decisions
  • Own technical direction for search microservices including Core Orchestration & Retrieval, Query-Understanding, Autocomplete, and Facet-Navigation
  • Design, build, and optimize high-throughput, low-latency services using distributed systems, fault-tolerance, and concurrency practices
  • Architect complex query patterns with search engines to improve relevance
  • Design data and feature pipelines within the search ecosystem
  • Lead discovery and design for medium-to-large initiatives with product and data science teams
  • Drive proofs of concept and validate ideas through prototypes
  • Run A/B experiments and measure search quality and business metrics
  • Mentor engineers and foster excellence
  • Collaborate with data scientists to productionize ML models
  • Own production reliability, observability, on-call, and root-cause analyses

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area; OR master's degree in one of these areas and 6 years’ experience; OR 10 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
  • 10+ years of experience designing and shipping production code in large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience with RESTful API design, fault-tolerance, and horizontal scaling
  • Deep expertise in backend development
  • Strong object-oriented design fundamentals
  • Experience building data/feature pipelines using streaming/batch techniques
  • Proficiency with technologies similar to Spark, Kafka, Hive, GCP, and Cassandra
  • Technical leadership, architectural direction, mentoring, and code reviews
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence across teams
  • Familiarity with ML model integration and the machine learning ecosystem
  • Java and Spring Boot experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices is preferred
