About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design, build, and enhance payroll capabilities across SAP Payroll
- Lead design and implementation of payroll features including payroll calculations, retroactive accounting, taxation, garnishments, benefits deductions, time integration, off-cycle payments, payroll corrections, and year-end activities
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, HR, Finance, Tax, and Compliance teams to translate business requirements into scalable payroll solutions
- Support complex payroll requirements including multi-state taxation, federal, state, and local tax regulations, supplemental payments, wage attachments, and legislative requirements
- Drive solution quality through design reviews, impact assessments, payroll testing strategies, and production readiness activities
- Investigate and resolve complex payroll issues through root cause analysis
- Deliver integrations between payroll, time management, HR systems, finance applications, tax providers, banking partners, and third-party vendors
- Identify opportunities to simplify processes, reduce technical debt, improve automation, and enhance payroll operational efficiency
- Support payroll year-end activities, upgrades, and HRSP implementation
- Improve payroll reliability, scalability, performance, observability, and supportability
- Deliver payroll solutions supporting more than 1.6 million associates monthly
- Work as part of Walmart’s Payroll Modernization Team to modernize and scale enterprise payroll technology
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of experience in designing, developing, and delivering enterprise-scale SAP solutions
- Strong expertise in SAP ABAP, SAP ABAP HR, and related SAP technologies
- Deep technical expertise in ABAP, ABAP HR, ABAP OO, CDS Views, AMDP, OData Services, Enhancements, Forms, Interfaces, Workflow, and SAP Integration technologies
- Experience designing and building scalable, high-performance applications and integrations across SAP and non-SAP platforms
- Experience with EPI-USE Variance Monitor and other SOLMAN/ALM tools
- Solid understanding of SAP Payroll architecture and payroll processing lifecycle, including payroll functions/operations
- Experience integrating SAP solutions with Workday, ServiceNow, SAP Finance (FI), SuccessFactors, cloud services, and custom applications
- Ability to translate complex business requirements into robust, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong collaboration, stakeholder management, and influencing skills
- Experience working in agile product organizations and supporting highly available, business-critical payroll services
- Experience supporting payroll populations exceeding 50,000 employees in complex enterprise environments
- Experience leading critical payroll initiatives through design, testing, deployment, and production stabilization
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area; or 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
- Ability to work in the Chennai office for daily work
