Key responsibilities & impact

Set the vision and organization-level strategy for SRE across reliability, observability, automation, and incident management
Scale the SRE function across multiple payments domains
Lead SRE managers and senior individual contributors
Develop innovative solutions for reliability challenges in high-availability, low-latency payment systems
Drive a culture of reliability, operational excellence, blamelessness, and continuous improvement
Ensure business continuity, disaster recovery, and compliance across the payments platform
Build relationships with executive stakeholders and represent SRE in executive forums, reviews, and strategic planning
Represent WEX in industry forums and conferences
Drive hiring strategy, headcount planning, and long-term team capability growth
Mentor engineers and engineering leaders and embed SRE principles across the development lifecycle
Architect resilient systems and develop observability, incident-management, automation, performance-optimization, and capacity-planning capabilities

Requirements

What you’ll need

15 years of experience in software engineering
7 years of engineering management experience managing managers and individual contributors
Deep experience in cloud-native architecture and large-scale distributed systems
Deep expertise in system design, automation, and performance optimization
Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, service meshes, and distributed tracing
Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes
Experience with Grafana, ELK stack, Splunk, or similar monitoring and logging platforms
Strong understanding of MySQL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL, networking, and storage architectures
Experience with high-availability, low-latency systems requiring transactional integrity and consistency
Excellent incident command and crisis management skills
Strong experience with regulatory and compliance frameworks
Proven reliability improvement leadership track record
Experience managing distributed teams and fostering psychological safety
Preferred: PCI-DSS compliance and secure payment-data handling
Preferred: Payment-flow monitoring, payment-gateway integrations, failure recovery, and idempotency in financial transactions
Preferred: End-of-day reconciliation and cutoff schedules
Preferred: AI/ML for anomaly detection and predictive analytics in observability
Preferred: Financial acumen in cost optimization and cloud-spend strategies
Preferred: Building and leading SRE organizations across domains or product lines
Preferred: Standardized SLOs, blameless culture, and incident communications
Preferred: Publications or conference talks in SRE
