About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct academic advising to Eberly College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students, including students in select Eberly majors
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of an advising center serving approximately 4,100 students across 32 programs and approximately 25 professional advisors
  • Lead advisor training, professional development, and assessment efforts
  • Serve as the primary point of escalation for complex student, curricular, and departmental issues
  • Supervise Advising Team Leads and plan, direct, and supervise their work
  • Maintain relationships with academic departments, chairs, undergraduate directors, and student support offices
  • Represent the center on university-level committees related to advising
  • Lead and develop assessment of academic advising, efficacy, and student satisfaction
  • Analyze and communicate student satisfaction survey results
  • Organize and structure the academic suspension process
  • Teach First Year Seminar as needed
  • Lead the Eberly Advisory Board for Academic Advising
  • Oversee transient coursework requests and approvals in accordance with catalog policies
  • Operate the Eberly Advising Center Navigate Kiosk to track and triage student traffic
  • Mine and analyze data reports to support the Director
  • Participate in college recruitment events and New Student Orientation academic sessions
  • Develop communication strategies for the advising center and communicate curricular updates
  • Enforce standard operating procedures and train incoming advisors
  • Lead the Eberly Advising Center’s central chat to support advisors
  • Hold regular staff meetings and support professional organization engagement
  • Partner with Career Development to identify experiential learning and professional development opportunities
  • Collaborate with the Director and Assistant Dean to ensure advising teams have needed information and resources
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Assistant Dean or Director

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience involving academic advising and student success in higher education
  • Knowledge of financial aid compliance, athletics, academic forgiveness policies, etc.
  • Ability to manage various objectives, projects, and groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in controversial or adversarial situations
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and initiate work accordingly
  • Ability to supervise a staff of 4 to 6 advisors
  • Ability to learn complex and varied curriculum
  • Ability to work with diverse populations in a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to comprehend and apply West Virginia University rules and policies for undergraduate students
  • Ability to learn to work with Banner, Navigate, DegreeWorks, ARGOS, and other data reporting systems
  • High level of ethics and integrity
  • Ability to generate productive relationships with internal and external partners
