About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the technical and operational lead of the Materials Characterization Facility within Shared Research Facilities
  • Report to the Director of the Shared Research Facilities
  • Maintain the functionality of all instrumentation in the MCF
  • Perform in-house calibration and routine maintenance of assigned instrumentation
  • Troubleshoot problematic equipment and solicit technical maintenance support
  • Work with vendors on repairs, upgrades, and required maintenance
  • Assist WVU research community and external users with instrument use, data interpretation, and analysis
  • Develop instrument protocols and training materials
  • Train new users on equipment operation and techniques
  • Oversee the MCF user community to maintain facility integrity
  • Engage the user community through workshops and lectures
  • Develop and manage instrumentation safety protocols with WVU EHS
  • Engage faculty and research leadership on adapting or expanding the MCF in line with university strategic goals
  • Develop long-term strategic plans, including equipment purchases, decommissioning, and new techniques
  • Perform paid services for researchers and external users
  • Maintain MCF supplies and purchasing
  • Work with WVU Facilities to ensure laboratory environmental standards
  • Oversee MCF student workers as appropriate
  • Assist other SRF facilities managers as appropriate

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience
  • Expertise in advanced materials characterization
  • Experience with X-ray Diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Optical Ellipsometry
  • Knowledge of spectroscopy, AFM, SPM, FTIR, and optical ellipsometry
  • Basic understanding of electronics, digital communications and networking, data acquisition and analysis, computer hardware and software
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
