About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the technical and operational lead of the Materials Characterization Facility within Shared Research Facilities
  • Maintain the functionality of all instrumentation in the facility
  • Perform in-house calibration and routine maintenance of assigned instrumentation
  • Troubleshoot problematic equipment and solicit technical support
  • Work with vendors on repairs, upgrades, and required maintenance
  • Assist WVU researchers and external users with instrument use, data interpretation, and analysis
  • Develop instrument protocols
  • Develop training materials and train new users on equipment operation and techniques
  • Oversee the MCF user community to maintain facility integrity
  • Continuously improve technical skills and engage users through workshops and lectures
  • Develop and manage instrumentation safety protocols in coordination with WVU EHS
  • Engage faculty and research leadership on adapting or expanding the facility in line with university strategic goals
  • Develop long-term strategic plans, including equipment purchases, decommissioning, and new techniques
  • Perform paid services for researchers and external users
  • Maintain supplies and purchasing associated with the facility
  • Work with WVU Facilities to ensure laboratory environmental standards
  • Oversee MCF student workers as appropriate
  • Assist other SRF facilities managers as appropriate
  • Report to the Director of the Shared Research Facilities

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in advanced materials characterization
  • Expertise in X-ray Diffraction
  • Expertise in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
  • Expertise in Raman Spectroscopy
  • Expertise in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)
  • Expertise in Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM)
  • Expertise in Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • Expertise in Optical Ellipsometry
  • Basic understanding of electronics, digital communications and networking
  • Basic understanding of data acquisition and analysis
  • Basic understanding of computer hardware and software
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
