About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Plans, implements and coordinates programming including recruitment, new student orientation, academic academies, multi-year retention initiatives and academic support services
  • Assists senior leadership in collecting and analyzing enrollment data to increase retention, persistence and completion
  • Collaborates with recruitment staff to support initiatives increasing yield of first-time admits to deposits
  • Coordinates with career services staff to help students select majors, identify career pathways and build professional profiles
  • Serves on college- and/or university-wide task forces and committees impacting student success
  • Provides academic counsel for selecting, matriculating to, and completing baccalaureate and professional degrees
  • Develops and prepares four- or five-year academic plans and records them in DegreeWorks
  • Tracks and monitors persistence and completion and revises plans when necessary
  • Uses appreciative, developmental, intrusive and prescriptive academic advising approaches
  • Interprets the WVU Undergraduate Catalog and degree-conferral policies
  • Uses Banner and SSC Campus to track academic history and in-progress work
  • Conducts outreach to at-risk students and refers them to academic, career and support services
  • Guides students through academic and federal financial aid suspension appeals, including creating academic success plans
  • Assists with transient approval by reviewing course equivalencies
  • Assesses student concerns and makes referrals to University representatives and units
  • Participates in unit events including on-campus recruiting, orientation, academic academies and commencement
  • Supports students transitioning from high school to college through convocation and orientation programs
  • Maintains knowledge of federal statutes such as FERPA protecting academic-record confidentiality

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • Master's Degree is preferred
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in advising or counseling, academic or student support services, and student information systems
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in program planning/management
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Knowledge of student information systems (i.e. Banner, Student Success Collaborative Campus)
  • Application of degree audit/planning tools (i.e. DegreeWorks)
  • Expertise in different forms of academic advising (appreciative, developmental, intrusive, etc.)
  • Professional oral and written communications
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical reasoning and problem solving
  • Ability to employ interpersonal communications and conflict resolution
  • Analytical skills prudent to conducting research
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
