About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Advise students and coordinate activities and events at West Virginia University
- Plan, implement, and coordinate recruitment, new student orientation, academic academies, retention initiatives, and academic support services
- Collect and analyze enrollment data to increase retention, persistence, and completion
- Support recruitment initiatives to increase yield of first-time admits to deposits
- Help students select majors, identify career pathways, and build professional profiles
- Serve on college- and university-wide task forces and committees affecting student success
- Provide academic counsel for selecting, matriculating to, and completing baccalaureate and professional degrees
- Develop and maintain four- or five-year academic plans in DegreeWorks
- Track persistence and completion and revise academic plans when necessary
- Conduct appreciative, developmental, intrusive, and prescriptive academic advising
- Interpret the WVU Undergraduate Catalog and remain current on degree-conferral policies and procedures
- Use Banner and SSC Campus to monitor academic history and in-progress work
- Conduct outreach to at-risk students and refer them to academic, career, and other support services
- Guide students through academic and federal financial aid suspension appeals, including creating academic success plans
- Review course equivalencies and support transient approval processes
- Assess student concerns and refer them to University representatives or units
- Participate in recruitment, orientation, academic academy, and commencement events
- Support high-school-to-college transitions through convocation and orientation programs
- Maintain current knowledge of FERPA and academic-record confidentiality requirements
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s Degree is required
- Master's Degree is preferred
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in advising or counseling, academic or student support services, and student information systems
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in program planning/management
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Knowledge of student information systems (Banner, Student Success Collaborative Campus)
- Application of degree audit/planning tools (DegreeWorks)
- Expertise in different forms of academic advising (appreciative, developmental, intrusive, etc.)
- Professional oral and written communications
- Demonstrated ability to apply critical reasoning and problem solving
- Ability to employ interpersonal communications and conflict resolution
- Analytical skills prudent to conducting research
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
