About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide strategic leadership and technical direction for all engineering oversight functions supporting the Major Projects Group across Xcel Energy operating companies
  • Serve as enterprise engineering authority for major projects
  • Oversee internal engineers and professional engineering consultants across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines
  • Ensure engineering designs comply with applicable codes, company standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee engineering deliverables including certified designs, drawing packages, specifications, models, and procurement support
  • Establish and maintain uniform engineering standards, specifications, and design criteria for major capital projects
  • Provide engineering leadership across a multi-billion-dollar capital project portfolio
  • Conduct scope development, EPC engineering deliverable reviews, constructability reviews, design optimization, value engineering, and technical risk assessment
  • Coordinate with internal organizations, EPC partners, construction leadership, project controls, supply chain, operations, regulatory, and legal teams
  • Prepare and support regulatory filings including CPCNs, route permits, and rate case filings
  • Ensure compliance with NERC/FERC reliability standards, Bulk Electric System requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Lead engineering quality assurance and quality control across the major projects portfolio
  • Implement lessons-learned and feedback processes for continuous improvement
  • Research and evaluate technology and equipment alternatives for system, environmental, and safety performance
  • Develop, select, and retain a diverse, trained, and motivated engineering workforce
  • Build internal engineering capability and support long-term workforce strategy
  • Represent Xcel Energy in industry and professional forums

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 12 years of combined experience in engineering, design, construction, and/or project management
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering leadership or management positions
  • Experience overseeing multi-discipline engineering teams and external engineering consultants
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations, including NESC, NEC, NERC/FERC, OSHA, DOT, and EPA
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with EPC, EPCM, and/or CMAR delivery models for large capital projects preferred
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • Experience with utility capital project governance processes preferred
  • Experience managing large portfolios of professional engineering consultant resources preferred
  • Experience supporting regulatory filings, rate case proceedings, or CPCN applications preferred
