About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design safe operating facilities for new and existing customers according to Xcel Energy construction standards and administrative instructions
- Provide distribution design project management, including complex designs
- Serve as the primary contact for future and existing customers
- Create cost-effective designs balancing customer needs with company standards and guidelines
- Manage projects from initial customer contact through post-project analysis
- Establish and manage construction work plans to meet schedules, design requirements, and financial or budgetary requirements
- Generate additional company revenue through contacts with new or existing customers
- Provide work clarification and direction to construction personnel when required
- Act as liaison between construction departments and customers
- Mentor and train Associate Designers and Designers
- Represent Xcel Energy with government officials, contractors, city agencies, vendors, architects, and engineers
- Obtain permits and easements in accordance with city, state, federal, and county requirements
- Execute contracts and agreements in compliance with administrative instructions and regulatory requirements
- Travel and overnight stays may be required
- Assist after normal business hours during emergency situations when needed
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED
- Associate degree in drafting, design, automation, electronics, mechatronics, engineering, GIS, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Designer II: minimum 2 years' experience as a Designer I or equivalent experience
- Senior Designer: minimum 5 years' design experience or equivalent experience; minimum 5 years direct Designer level experience with an Associate degree
- Principal Designer: at least 9 years' design experience or equivalent experience
- Proficiency or mastery in GIS, design software, work management programs, and related systems, depending on level
- Knowledge of construction standards, materials, and technical codes
- Knowledge of Transmission line design, Substation design, or Distribution design for Senior Designer
- Subject matter expertise in Transmission line design, Substation design, or Distribution design for Principal Designer
- Proficiency or mastery of Windows and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Access
- Self-starter able to work with minimal supervision
- Highly effective communication and innovative problem-solving skills for Senior and Principal Designer
- Driver's License may be required
- Existing Xcel Energy Electric Distribution Design experience preferred
