About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the Vancouver Payments Platform engineering team
- Deliver early-stage initiatives powering money movement across Xero and enabling global product lines, including global bill payments
- Build shared payment orchestration, risk and fraud, and multi-provider capabilities
- Develop reliable, secure distributed services for high-throughput production environments
- Balance customer value with long-term architectural progress
- Apply AI to product problems while protecting customer trust
- Own delivery, staffing, and operational health of the engineering team
- Handle hiring, performance management, and career development for engineers
- Set team priorities with product and engineering leadership
- Own team processes, quality standards, and on-call practices
- Support technical architecture decisions and ensure the team can deliver them
- Establish team practices, including AI-assisted development
- Build accountability for quality, reliability, and on-call into team operations
Requirements
What you’ll need- Proven record of leading engineering teams that deliver highly available distributed systems under real production constraints
- Strong operational practices
- Experience growing and managing engineers, including hiring, performance management, and career development
- Track record of building inclusive, high-trust team cultures
- Experience building a platform or product from an early idea into production and evolving it as adoption and complexity grow
- Technical depth in system architecture, API design, and data stores
- Experience setting direction and breaking complex problems into clear, actionable plans
- Comfort using AI tools to improve development workflows and judgment about validating their output
- Experience in payments, fintech, or money movement is nice to have
- Experience modernizing established systems is nice to have
- Experience partnering with product, design, and cross-functional teams is nice to have
- Hybrid candidates must be based in Vancouver, British Columbia, or relocate to Vancouver
