About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Translate company-level objectives into strategic sub-objectives across analytics, ML, AI products, and experimentation
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of data scientists, analytics engineers, ML engineers, and managers from approximately 12 to 30 people
- Design team structures and operating models for high throughput across multiple locations and time zones
- Drive AI-native ways of working and shipping value across Xero
- Act as the primary data partner to Product & Technology
- Advise C-suite and senior leadership on data utilization, retention strategy, new data domains, and AI investment decisions
- Represent data science in executive forums
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Design, Marketing, Commercial, Legal, Privacy, and Risk on strategy, prioritization, and governance
- Own AI governance, model risk, data quality, privacy posture, and experimentation integrity across the portfolio
- Drive behavioral, technical, and cultural standards across the vertical
- Improve global hiring practices and build talent maps
- Coach senior leaders and individual contributors
- Identify delivery and strategic risks and design organizational processes for consistent, high-quality outcomes
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experience operating, shipping, and leading at scale within a fast-paced technology environment
- Ability to act as a proactive self-starter and executive partner
- Experience shaping strategic agendas with C-suite and senior leadership, presenting to board-level leadership, and influencing investment decisions
- Ability to manage ambiguity and structure complex cross-functional challenges
- Ability to sustain throughput across multi-timezone teams and hold stakeholders accountable
- Experience leading managers and coaching leaders into senior roles
- Experience navigating significant scale-ups, operating model transformations, and continuous evolution
- Practical experience with frontier-model platforms such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google
- Experience building agentic workflows, chatbots, and AI-powered products
- Substantial experience leading data science, ML, or analytics functions
- Proven experience managing people leaders across multi-team structures
- Extensive experience with enterprise-scale data science functions, AI/ML productionisation, AI governance, model risk frameworks, and experimentation integrity
- Deep technical fluency across applied ML, analytics engineering, instrumentation, eventing, and schema governance
- Prior exposure to SaaS or small business segments
- Track record of driving scale, data quality, and privacy compliance
- Technical bachelor's or master's degree
- Public thought leadership or open-source contributions in data or AI
- PhDs welcome for applied, high-impact organizational challenges
