About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Advise on payments and financial services regulation
  • Partner with product, risk and strategy teams on complex regulatory questions across markets
  • Support Xero's financial services ambitions in Australia, the US and UK
  • Build trusted relationships with regulators
  • Mentor junior members of the legal team
  • Advise on global payments regulation, financial services law and financial crime, including AML/CTF and sanctions requirements
  • Develop regulatory guardrails for new payment participation models
  • Support AFSL obligations, compliance and risk management across Xero's Australian payments business
  • Support expansion of payments and embedded financial services capability into the US and UK
  • Work with legal, compliance, risk and product colleagues, external advisers and regulators

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Relevant law degree
  • Current practising certificate
  • 8+ years PQE
  • Solid financial services regulatory and payments experience
  • Experience providing regulatory advice to a global, growth-focused technology business
  • Experience running large-scale regulatory projects
  • Experience liaising directly with financial regulators
  • Strong commercial acumen
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-moving environment
  • Ability to translate complex legal and regulatory detail into plain English
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to build trust across legal, product and risk teams
  • Working rights for the country where the role is based
