About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the architectural direction for end-to-end money movement across multi-currency wallets and balances, the core ledger, card issuing and authorisation, in-app FX, overseas transfers and payouts, treasury and pre-funding, settlement and reconciliation, and shared platform services
- Define double-entry ledger design, chart of accounts, sub-ledger boundaries, immutability and correction rules, multi-currency representation, precision and rounding policies, and balance derivation or storage
- Define handling of authorisation holds, reversals, partial and incremental captures, refunds, FX revaluation and unreconciled positions
- Design idempotency, exactly-once outcomes over at-least-once messaging, transaction state machines, and failure, retry, timeout and compensation paths
- Architect card issuing, authorisation, clearing and settlement as a Mastercard Principal Member, including stand-in processing, expiry, disputes, chargebacks and mobile-wallet tokenisation
- Design FX rate sourcing, quoting, rate locking, spread and exposure management, currency exchange, pre-funding and liquidity models
- Design cross-border transfer corridors, payout rail integrations, pre-funding and nostro models, and embedded sanctions and AML screening
- Design reconciliation and settlement systems across time zones, currencies and partners
- Set measurable latency, throughput, availability and cost targets, and define consistency, recovery, replay and backfill approaches
- Establish engineering and coding standards, conduct architecture reviews, and maintain architecture decision records and documentation
- Evaluate and oversee card processors, scheme connectivity, banking and settlement partners, FX liquidity providers, payout partners, KYC and screening vendors, and infrastructure providers
- Mentor tech leads and senior engineers and eventually build and lead a small architecture group
Requirements
What you’ll need- Deep payments and ledger experience (essential), including designing or substantially rebuilding a production financial ledger
- Real-world experience with journal design, posting models, balance consistency and correction strategies
- Hands-on experience with card scheme integrations, ideally Mastercard
- Experience with issuer processing, authorisation flows, clearing files, and disputes
- Production coding experience at scale
- Experience designing distributed settlement flows and field-level amount types and precision
- Experience with safeguarding and customer fund segregation
- Experience with payment and e-money licensing, data residency, auditability and technology risk requirements
- Experience with MAS and other Asia Pacific regulators is ideally included
- Experience operating across several countries, currencies and regulators
- Strong writing and documentation skills
- Ability to defend technical opinions on design patterns, standards and trade-offs
- Credibility with partners and ability to evaluate vendor recommendations with evidence
- Experience with Golang, event-driven architectures and cloud-native infrastructure is a plus
