About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own reliability of the Redis Enterprise and AWS ElastiCache caching layer, including capacity planning, failover behavior, upgrade strategy, and healthy usage patterns
Participate in the on-call rotation and escalate data-layer issues during production incidents
Support internal customers with slow-query troubleshooting and storage-use advice
Convert recurring support questions into documentation and tooling
Manage database and cache infrastructure as code using Terraform modules and provisioning workflows
Build database and cache templates and standards in the internal platform’s golden path
Build and maintain data-layer dashboards, alerts, and SLOs
Improve performance and resilience across MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Redis fleets
Advise development teams on architecture, database engine selection, and caching placement
Consult product teams on schema design, query patterns, and capacity planning
Lead data-layer design reviews and mentor engineers
Create documentation, patterns, and runbooks for database and cache operations
Set direction for Zapier’s data infrastructure and grow the DBRE practice

Requirements

What you’ll need

At least 7 years in systems administration, systems engineering, or software development
At least 4 years running production relational databases
Deep expertise in MySQL or PostgreSQL and working knowledge of the other
Knowledge of database-engine ecosystem extensions and tools
Experience designing and operating caching at scale, including Redis
Experience designing and maintaining highly available, cloud-based database systems in AWS or another cloud platform
Experience managing infrastructure with Terraform or similar IaC tooling
Comfort operating stateful services alongside Kubernetes or other distributed systems
Experience implementing metrics, logging, and alerting using tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, or CloudWatch
Experience with query performance data, replication lag, and cache hit rates
Experience participating in an on-call rotation for production data systems
Experience reviewing designs, mentoring engineers, documenting practices, and building automation/tools
Ability to use AI tools responsibly for automation code, query plans, logs, runbooks, and incident investigation
Education is not a requirement
