About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform hands-on telecommunications field functions within the assigned geographic area
  • Install, commission, test, turn up, troubleshoot, and maintain optical transmission systems and telecommunications equipment
  • Work with SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, and Ethernet-based equipment, including Ciena, Nokia, Infinera, Juniper, and Cisco systems
  • Perform OTDR, Ethernet, BER, and SONET acceptance testing
  • Complete installation, decommissioning, and troubleshooting of network and customer services
  • Conduct preliminary site surveys for building entrance construction requirements and equipment space availability
  • Perform preventive and demand maintenance of the network, critical infrastructure, and materials
  • Install, label, scope, clean, and test fiber optic patch cords
  • Work on outside plant networks, including metro and long-haul fibers
  • Identify and report potential network problems and resolve issues before they affect service
  • Write routine reports and complete site surveys, fiber panel audits, closeout packages, and power audit reports
  • Communicate with customers, management, peers, contractors, and other organizational members
  • Inspect outdoor cabinets, buried cable, construction sites, and other facilities in varied environments and weather conditions
  • Act as a resource for less experienced Field Technicians
  • Conduct routine inspections of company-issued vehicles
  • Follow personal safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in scheduled on-call rotations and provide after-hours support
  • Work occasional long shifts with overnight travel as necessary
  • Assist other employees and perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Field-based role requiring travel to job sites
  • Work in varied environments, including indoor, outdoor, heights, and confined spaces
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and meet physical job requirements
  • May require evening, weekend, and on-call support
  • Experience installing, testing, or turning up SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, or Ethernet-based telecommunications equipment required
  • OTDR experience preferred
  • C Power experience preferred
  • Up to 1G, 10G, 100G, 400G circuit testing experience preferred
  • RFC2544, RFC6349 Truespeed, iPerf, and Y.1564 preferred
  • Familiarity with optical power meters, digital multimeters, fiber identifiers, and fiber scopes
  • Ability to read and interpret OSHA/company safety rules, MSDS, MOPs, CLR/DLR, process and procedure documents, and vendor documentation
  • Ability to follow all personal safety policies and procedures
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • At least 2 years of experience in fiber optic installation, maintenance, or a related technical field
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic systems, cabling, and network infrastructure
  • Experience using basic fiber testing equipment, such as power meters and OTDRs
  • Ability to pass an MVR check and maintain eligibility to operate a company-issued vehicle
  • Possession of a state-issued driver's license for the state in which you live
  • Ability to maintain proper legal identification and support background check requirements
