About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct intake, screening, assessment, referral, and short-term solution-focused non-medical counseling
  • Provide individual, couples, and group counseling
  • Assess presenting problems and plan effective treatment
  • Provide information about Navy programs and in-person NMC counseling services
  • Provide immediate intervention and risk assessment
  • Ensure referral and follow-up for suicidal or homicidal risk cases
  • Participate in regional quarterly quality assurance procedures
  • Maintain FFSMIS clinical counseling documentation in accordance with applicable policies, laws, and instructions
  • Provide warm handoffs for restricted domestic abuse and sexual assault reports
  • Intervene in crisis situations using sound professional judgment and ethical practice
  • Provide temporary surge support across additional Navy Regions via telephone and Navy-authorized virtual platforms
  • Receive Command and non-Command SAIL referrals and contact referred Sailors
  • Conduct initial and ongoing risk assessments using the Columbia Suicide Severity Risk Scale (C-SSRS)
  • Provide ongoing safety planning using the Veterans Affairs Safety Plan
  • Collaborate with Sailor commands regarding risk, safety, and recovery progress under DoDI 6490.08
  • Provide clinical case management to Sailors enrolled in SAIL
  • Connect Sailors with behavioral health providers and supportive resources
  • Maintain SAIL case documentation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree in counseling accredited by CACREP; or master’s degree in social work accredited by CSWE; or master’s degree in marriage and family therapy accredited by COAMFTE; or doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology with a one-year APA-accredited clinical internship
  • Current, valid, and unrestricted clinical license or certification authorizing independent clinical practice: LCSW, LMFT, LCP, LPC, LCPC, or LMHC
  • Maintain current clinical credentials and privileges throughout the FFSP assignment
  • Minimum of two years of full-time, post-master’s supervised clinical experience
  • Meet or exceed Tier II clinical practitioner requirements
  • Current clinical competence through at least periodic direct-service clinical experience during the two years preceding hire
  • 2+ years providing case management to clinical clients
  • 1+ year providing clinical services on a telehealth platform
  • Minimum of 6 months’ experience assessing clients for suicidality, managing crises with suicidal clients, and implementing safety plans
  • Knowledge of standard documentation requirements for clinical services
  • Ability to locate resources and provide warm handoffs
  • Broad knowledge of clinical and non-clinical support services for referrals
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, handle a caseload of 25–30, and complete notes within 48 hours
  • Ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication, case management, and clinical documentation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and office software
  • Must be physically located within reasonable commuting distance of a military installation
  • Dedicated, secure, private professional workspace suitable for telehealth
  • Flexibility to support clients across time zones and respond to surge assignments or travel needs with limited notice
  • U.S. Citizenship required for positions requiring access to U.S. Government facilities and systems
  • Reliable transportation to assigned locations and nearby facilities
  • Must apply for and maintain a U.S. passport
  • Vaccinations may be needed per CDC guidelines
