About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct in-process formal inspections for trade-specific systems throughout all construction stages
  • Ensure specifications, class rules, SOPs, and work instructions are implemented at each construction stage
  • Develop Inspection and Test Plans for specific operations, trade areas, or systems
  • Review specifications, class rules, work instructions, and SOPs to determine trade-specific quality requirements
  • Develop and implement Inspection and Test Plans for new construction and repair projects
  • Perform daily in-process quality inspections and document and communicate results to supervisors
  • Perform accuracy control activities for new construction and repair projects at Seaspan Shipyards
  • Produce and sign final inspection reports as objective quality evidence for customers
  • Perform receiving inspections of components, mechanical and electrical systems, steel, and pipe
  • Attend formal inspections with customers and regulatory bodies
  • Document defects and nonconformities and provide results to supervisors and Customer/Class as required
  • Work with trade and area supervisors to improve in-process quality
  • Perform gap analyses of procedures, work instructions, and forms
  • Assist in developing and modifying procedures, work instructions, and forms
  • Maintain quality files for the trade-specific area
  • Perform periodic audits of trade-specific suppliers for contract compliance
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Diploma in a relevant discipline (Marine, Mechanical Naval Architect, Electrical Engineering or Geomatics / equivalent Surveying measuring background preferred), or Red Seal Trades Certificates, or CWB CSA W178.2 Level 1 Welding Inspector, or NACE Level I Paint Inspector
  • 5–8 years’ experience in shipyards or complex manufacturing industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Alternatively, 5–8 years’ experience as a welding inspector of steel structure and piping fabrication, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Technical understanding of NDT techniques and their application to meet contract, regulatory and statutory requirements
  • Prior Quality/Accuracy Control or Quality Assurance experience is desirable
  • Formal quality assurance certifications desirable
  • Understanding of the fabrication, installation, commissioning and testing of trade specific systems
  • Proficient in the use of Total Stations, Laser Scanning, and Laser Trackers
  • Competent in the use of Survey Software, particularly Spatial Analyzer
  • Working knowledge of quality control and inspection procedures
  • Ability to develop Quality Plans and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
  • Understanding of quality techniques and their application to shipbuilding
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and drawings
  • Ability to read material test reports and understand chemical/physical requirements for steel
  • Technical writing skills
  • Advanced computer skills including MS Office Suite, Visio, SharePoint, AutoCAD, and Rhinoceros
  • Strong communication skills and customer service focus
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and problem solve
  • Good judgment and reasoning skills
  • Ability to work with limited direction
