About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Define tasks, observations, actions, state transitions, reset behavior, termination conditions, and measurable outcomes for reinforcement learning environments
- Develop rewards, scoring systems, feedback, and evaluation criteria
- Test whether agents exploit scoring rules without completing intended tasks
- Implement baseline agents, train and compare policies, and design controlled learning experiments
- Separate training and held-out tasks, check for leakage, version experiments, repeat runs, and report uncertainty and performance across conditions
- Inspect trajectories and learning behavior to identify policy, data, reward, or environment problems
- Work with domain experts to validate task assumptions
- Collaborate with engineers to turn research prototypes into reusable environments, evaluation tools, and documented methods
Requirements
What you’ll need- Hands-on experience formulating reinforcement learning problems, constructing environments, training agents, and critically assessing results
- Strong programming and software debugging skills
- Experience building and testing research systems that others can run and extend
- Sound experimental design and statistical reasoning, including controlled comparisons, evaluation splits, variability, and benchmark limitations
- Ability to reason about environment dynamics, reward design, and agent behavior
- Independent research judgment and clear communication
- Experience building interactive environments, simulators, or benchmarks used by other researchers (even better)
- Work on agent evaluation, reward design, imitation learning, or learning from real-world data (even better)
- Research artifacts with reproducible experiments, useful baselines, and evidence of investigating failures beyond headline scores (even better)
