Key responsibilities & impact- Participate in design discussions and architecture decisions for the new booking service
- Design and build backend services in Java 25 and Spring Boot/Spring MVC using virtual threads
- Build carrier integrations with Spring RestClient and implement per-carrier resilience using Resilience4j
- Validate requests and carrier payloads against JSON Schema and maintain versioned, documented contracts
- Design asynchronous event-driven flows with Amazon SQS, including idempotency, retries, and dead-letter handling
- Model and evolve PostgreSQL data structures, migrations, and performance tuning
- Design horizontally scalable services that remain stable under peak load
- Plan and run load and stress tests, identify bottlenecks, and implement fixes
- Build and maintain automated unit, integration, REST API, and regression tests in CI
- Implement observability through structured logging, metrics, alarms, and traces using CloudWatch and OpenSearch
- Migrate from the legacy Python booking service through parallel running, result comparison, and safe cutover
- Use Claude and other AI tools for design, coding, testing, and documentation, while reviewing outputs
- Own features end to end, including GitHub CI/CD pipelines, AWS deployments, and production support
- Write maintainable code, conduct code reviews, share knowledge, and raise engineering standards
Requirements
What you’ll need- At least 5 years of professional backend development experience
- Strong Java background and hands-on experience with Java 21+; Java 25 LTS is used
- Solid experience with Spring Boot and Spring MVC
- Understanding of virtual threads and JVM concurrency
- Experience with Spring RestClient, WebClient, or RestTemplate
- Experience implementing resilience with Resilience4j or similar
- Experience with JSON Schema validation and REST/OpenAPI contract design, versioning, and backward compatibility
- Experience designing and running microservices and distributed systems
- Knowledge of failure modes, consistency, idempotency, and backpressure
- Experience with horizontal scaling, stateless design, connection pooling, and caching
- Hands-on load and stress testing with Gatling, k6, or JMeter
- Strong testing experience with JUnit, Mockito, Testcontainers, REST Assured, Postman, contract tests, and CI regression suites
- Clean code practices, SOLID principles, design patterns, refactoring, and static analysis such as SonarQube
- Good knowledge of PostgreSQL or another relational database, including schema design, indexing, transactions, and query tuning
- Hands-on AWS experience, including Amazon SQS and CloudWatch
- Secure configuration and secrets handling using tools such as Parameter Store or Secrets Manager
- Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch
- Comfortable with Maven, Git, GitHub, and CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub Actions
- Practical experience using Claude or similar AI coding assistants, with ability to review generated code and designs
- Infrastructure as code using Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation
- Experience with container platforms such as ECS or EKS, including autoscaling
- Very good written and spoken English
