About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Report directly to the Infrastructure Engineering Manager in a newly formed SME team
Provide the Service Ops team with support and expertise on databases and applications
Identify opportunities to improve service to customers so that SLAs are exceeded and customer feedback remains high
Troubleshoot data quality and consistency problems that may result in application issues
Support colleagues across the business with database and application issues, including Development, Testing and Internal systems
Support, monitor and improve on-premises SQL Server and Azure-hosted database services
Work with Infrastructure Ops, Infrastructure Engineering and Application Ops on the strategic direction of platforms and systems
Undertake specific project activities when required
Maintain database and application availability and performance through monitoring, measuring and improving database schemas and queries
Monitor SQL databases and servers to identify performance issues before they impact customers
Support internal and external customers with ParentPay database/data queries, data quality and application problems
Perform capacity planning for long-term growth and peak trading periods
Work with Development to identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks
Produce ad-hoc management and external customer reports through data extracts or SRS reports
Maintain data security and best practices, including backup schedules, encryption, retention and restore testing
Introduce tools and methodologies to improve efficiency
Support SQL Server instances through their lifecycle, including maintenance, updates and migrations, on-premises and in Azure
Accurately document and progress incidents, tasks and changes in ServiceNow

Requirements

What you’ll need

Proven experience of at least two years as a database administrator in an enterprise environment
Ability to create and optimize SQL queries and stored procedures using SQL Server and T-SQL
Working knowledge of database monitoring tools across on-premises and Azure-hosted environments
Working knowledge of ITSM tooling for accurate documentation and progression of incidents, tasks and changes
Awareness of backup/DR requirements, including encryption, retention and restore-testing practices, across on-premises and Azure-hosted databases
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Experience performing migrations/upgrades of SQL Server
Knowledge of infrastructure including compute, storage and networks, primarily on-premises with growing exposure to Azure-hosted database services
Ability to take personal responsibility for training and self-development
