Key responsibilities & impact- Develop statistical, predictive, and recommendation models to support academic and business decisions
- Investigate business problems and translate them into testable hypotheses, with experimental design and clear success metrics
- Conduct statistical analyses and parametric and non-parametric hypothesis tests
- Develop, train, and evaluate supervised and unsupervised models, including fine-tuning pre-trained models and using AutoML
- Build neural networks with Keras for classification, regression, time series, and representation learning (embeddings)
- Design and evolve recommendation systems using neural networks, Multi-Armed Bandits, and Bayesian methods with MCMC
- Plan and analyze A/B tests and online experiments, communicating results with statistical rigor
- Collaborate with ML Engineering and MLOps teams on model deployment, monitoring, drift detection, and retraining
- Apply AI-assisted development practices, such as Spec-Driven Development (SDD), critical review of AI-generated code, and fulfillment of acceptance criteria before merging
- Ensure model quality, explainability, freedom from bias, and compliance with Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD), CNE guidelines, and the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) framework for the use of AI in education
- Support the development of less experienced team members through technical reviews and knowledge sharing
- Communicate model results, assumptions, and limitations to technical and non-technical audiences
Requirements
What you’ll need- Education: Bachelor's degree completed
- More than 3 years of experience in data science, with models delivered to production or measurable business impact
- Strong foundation in statistics, including inference, parametric and non-parametric hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and experimental design
- Experience with supervised and unsupervised models, including validation, metric selection, hyperparameter tuning, and AutoML
- Hands-on experience with neural networks in Keras and familiarity with fine-tuning pre-trained models
- Experience with recommendation systems, including neural network and Multi-Armed Bandit approaches
- Knowledge of Bayesian methods and MCMC, for example, using PyMC
- Proficiency in Python and SQL, as well as current libraries such as pandas, scikit-learn, and Keras
- Experience with code version control (Git) and familiarity with MLOps practices, such as experiment tracking with MLflow or a similar tool
- Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate analyses into business recommendations
