About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as the senior technical and programmatic lead responsible for driving development of core mission systems and subsystems
- Engage directly in hands-on technical work including architecture, analysis, design review, and trade studies
- Hold the system together across subsystems through requirements decomposition, interface management, and verification and validation planning
- Own or contribute to program planning, milestone tracking, resource management, and cross-functional coordination
- Take direct responsibility for schedule, technical performance, and team output, and present technical and programmatic status to leadership
- Lead a small but growing team of engineers, setting technical direction and maintaining accountability for deliverables
- Hire, direct, and develop engineers as the team grows
- Interface with external partners, vendors, and subject matter experts
- Contribute to scalable processes, tools, and workflows
- Operate effectively in a high-ambiguity, high-stakes environment and create structure where none exists
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or a closely related technical discipline
- Significant experience in aerospace, defense, or space systems, with a strong preference for work on flight or mission-critical hardware
- Demonstrated experience in program or project management, including direct responsibility for schedule, technical performance, and team output
- Experience managing engineers or technical personnel: hiring, directing, and developing people
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting technical and programmatic status to a leadership audience
- Comfort operating independently in an early-stage environment where structure must sometimes be created rather than followed
- All communication for this role is in English, including your resume and every application requirement
- Preferred: Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or a related field
- Preferred: Formal systems engineering training or certification (INCOSE CSEP, MBSE, or equivalent)
- Preferred: Experience with space resource utilization, in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), planetary science, or lunar mission architecture
- Preferred: Exposure to fusion energy, cryogenic systems, or quantum computing hardware
- Preferred: Prior experience at an aerospace startup, NewSpace company, or early-stage deep-tech organization
- Relevant experience with requirements management and model-based systems engineering tools, mechanical CAD, structural or thermal analysis tools, scheduling and program-control tools, earned value reporting, and Microsoft Excel
