About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead Pula Re’s senior management team in developing strategy and Board-approved KPIs for a rolling three-year strategic business plan
  • Drive execution of strategy and business objectives, adapting to changing circumstances
  • Take professional and administrative responsibility for Pula Re’s operations and organizational development
  • Optimize resources and advise the board on the Pula Advisors AG Services Contract
  • Build and lead an effective, diverse team
  • Serve as line manager, team leader and ultimate executive responsible within the management team
  • Review organizational structure and recommend changes
  • Maintain responsibility for personnel management and organizational development
  • Promote an open culture, core values, sound financial practices and high ethical standards
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Maintain a proactive company-wide risk culture
  • Advise the Pula Re Board on strategy and agricultural insurance objectives
  • Obtain, maintain and strengthen ratings with external ratings agencies
  • Personally manage key relationships with regulators, rating agencies, government ministries/agencies, clients and reinsurers during the start-up phase
  • Lead activities required to establish Pula Re in line with the approved Business Plan
  • Oversee all company activities, performance, budgeting, management and reporting
  • Establish administrative structures, processes and systems
  • Establish and run world-class reinsurance underwriting and claims management processes
  • Establish a rigorous risk and compliance function
  • Manage company risk profile and tolerance, including health and safety performance
  • Ensure effective internal controls and take ultimate responsibility for audits
  • Protect and pursue Pula Re’s legal interests
  • Ensure effective implementation of board decisions

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Proven track record of establishing and leading a reinsurance company serving clients in Africa and Asia (ideal)
  • Knowledge, experience and understanding of reinsurance needs in African and Asian markets
  • Strong understanding of reinsurance operations, preferably with retrocession experience
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant professional experience and knowledge in insurance and/or reinsurance
  • Master’s degree in a relevant sector such as engineering, finance, banking, economics, business, or law
  • Ability to innovate and challenge the status quo
  • Passion to make a difference in emerging and frontier markets
  • Commercial acumen
  • Ability to communicate and function in a culturally diverse and change-oriented setting
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Working knowledge of French would be an added advantage
  • Strong analytical mind and ability to grasp potential projects quickly
  • Strong people-development skills
