Key responsibilities & impact- Use SQL and Python to wrangle corrections and parole administrative data
- Model policy scenarios and quantify tradeoffs using regressions, time series, stock-and-flow modeling, and distributional analysis
- Translate policy concepts into concrete modeling to support evidence-based policy changes
- Own the end-to-end analytical process, from breaking objectives into products and designing the approach to producing findings and decision materials
- Create decks and memos for Department of Corrections leadership and tailor findings to motivate action
- Scope projects, create roadmaps, identify unknowns, and adjust course as objectives change
- Collaborate across the organization to obtain state context, understand data infrastructure, and support policy implementation
- Identify additional analytical opportunities in assigned states and conduct early exploration
- Develop reusable analytical approaches and frameworks for teammates
- Travel approximately once every six months, and occasionally as required, to state partners within the continental United States, including prisons and parole offices
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5 or more years of practical experience exploring, analyzing, and processing complex datasets
- Professional experience using SQL with large datasets, including high proficiency writing efficient queries for complex extraction and transformation
- Professional experience with Python, particularly pandas, for statistical analysis and data visualization
- Sufficient statistical background to reason about analysis design, examine results closely, and prepare analyses that hold up to scrutiny
- Experience scoping and delivering analytical work, balancing depth and speed amid short timelines and shifting priorities
- Experience on teams where ownership is shared across functions, including proactively seeking missing context and flagging risks before they become blockers
- Experience adapting quantitative methods to introduce intuitively meaningful metrics in ambiguous, unconstrained contexts (preferred)
- Experience working with large public-sector administrative datasets, especially related to criminal justice (preferred)
- Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, Looker, Jupyter notebooks, and Python/Pandas (preferred)
