Key responsibilities & impact- Lead, define, and develop full-stack software systems and platforms enabling large-scale research, evaluation, and dissemination of safety insights
- Implement service boundaries, data model evolution, integration patterns, pipelines, and evaluation frameworks
- Set technical direction across projects and align architecture and data frameworks with research priorities and the AI evaluation ecosystem
- Iteratively design complex, ambiguous, cross-cutting systems
- Ensure consistency in engineering practices and establish standards for AI-assisted engineering
- Use Claude Code on large refactors, greenfield work, and adopted external code; develop patterns and documentation
- Provide feedback on dangerous, inappropriate, or inefficient use of AI coding tools
- Mentor junior engineers and promote knowledge sharing and professional growth
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and training software engineers
- Represent technical work across the organization and in selected external settings
- Contribute to or lead department-specific and cross-functional initiatives
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 8 years of experience in software development, with a focus on platform security
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks
- Experience deploying several complex software products
- Understanding of the software development life cycle
- Deep expertise in React in production at meaningful scale or complexity, Python services, async patterns, careful data handling, sensible API design, PostgreSQL, complex data structures, containers, deployment, and observability
- Architectural judgment based on real experience and ability to articulate trade-offs
- Sophisticated use of AI coding tools, including Claude Code or similar tools
- Track record of technical leadership without formal authority
- Clear, direct written communication and ability to translate complex technical work for varied audiences
- Genuine interest in AI safety, test & evaluation, or harm domains such as synthetic media and chatbot safety
