About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Report to the Chief Executive Officer with a dotted line to the Chief Administrative Officer
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, inventory/COGS/sales accounting, reconciliations, and month-end close
- Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, including the Finance Manager
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting in accordance with internal accounting, GAAP, and tax requirements
- Maintain and improve cash flow forecasting
- Monitor financial trends involving inventory, reserves, returns, fulfillment costs, and margin performance
- Ensure financial data accuracy and integrity in Wantable’s proprietary commerce and inventory platform in collaboration with engineering
- Strengthen controls and reconciliation processes for inventory, returns, sales tax, and cash settlement
- Collaborate with operations, merchandising, fulfillment, technology, and leadership teams
- Translate financial data into business recommendations for non-financial stakeholders
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives
- Partner with the fractional CFO on onboarding, year-end close, audits, and specialized projects
- Coordinate annual financial audits and reviews with the external accounting partner
- Prepare financial information for banks, factors, payment providers, and credit cards, including monitoring bank covenant requirements
- Review annual business insurance renewals
- Coordinate quarterly estimates, extensions, and annual tax returns with external tax partners
- Identify and implement scalable financial workflow improvements
- Build and implement automation, analytics, and AI-enabled tools for reporting, forecasting, and decision-making
- Track and report time, cost, and accuracy gains from process improvements
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Progressive accounting and finance experience, including hands-on experience running the accounting function as a Controller or similar senior role
- Experience in accounting and finance for an eCommerce, retail, apparel, or other inventory-intensive business
- Proven experience managing month-end close, audits, budgeting/forecasting, and cash flow reporting
- Deep knowledge of GAAP accounting and financial reporting best practices, including inventory, returns, reserves, fulfillment costs, and sales taxes
- Demonstrated track record of process improvements with measurable efficiency gains
- Experience in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, high-volume, tech-integrated environment
- Organized, collaborative, hands-on, proactive, and solutions-oriented
- Hands-on experience using AI tools and building automations for operational efficiency, process streamlining, and decision support
- Curiosity to research and explore new tools
- Growth mindset and interest in higher-level finance work, including budgeting and FP&A, cash and working capital management, and lender and leadership reporting
- Manufacturing or internally developed product-line experience is a plus
- Comfort with proprietary software platforms, scripting, or low-code/no-code automation tools is a plus
- QuickBooks experience and training is a plus
- CPA license is a plus
