About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the end-to-end architecture and two-to-three-year direction of Alpaca’s Redpanda-based event streaming platform, UTS ecosystem, client libraries, and user-facing streaming
  • Lead the transition from batch processing to event-driven systems across Alpaca
  • Design user-facing streaming at scale, including connection fan-out, slow consumers, backpressure, ordering, delivery guarantees, and failure modes
  • Establish standards for event-driven design, including schema evolution, topic ownership, replay, and idempotency
  • Own shared libraries, including versioning and deprecation decisions
  • Shape AuthN/AuthZ direction and lead identity-related streaming work, including real-time subscription authorization, token lifecycle, and multi-tenant isolation
  • Help shape Alpaca’s AI-native development platform through schemas, contracts, and event streams
  • Partner with SRE on chaos testing and game days, and with QA on test tooling and pre-production gates
  • Lead through influence, mentoring, design reviews, and delegation
  • Join the Platform on-call rotation and serve as technical lead during shared-infrastructure incidents

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 8+ years of professional engineering experience, including several years running systems at real scale
  • Proficiency in Go, or deep experience in another strongly-typed language with willingness to learn Go quickly
  • Production expertise architecting Kafka or Redpanda event streaming systems, including partitioning, consumer groups, rebalancing, retention, and delivery guarantees
  • Experience delivering realtime data to clients at scale using WebSockets, SSE, or gRPC streaming
  • Experience handling fan-out, slow consumers, and backpressure in production
  • Experience driving technical direction across team boundaries without formal authority
  • Experience writing RFCs and owning technical decisions
  • Experience building or maintaining libraries used by multiple teams
  • Knowledge of backward compatibility and deprecation
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers
  • Real depth in at least one adjacent area: identity and access, developer tooling and CI, or testing and resilience
  • Kubernetes expertise beyond the basics, including writing Helm charts and understanding security best practices; job experience or certifications to prove it
  • Experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL
  • Previous startup experience and ability to work in ambiguous, changing environments
  • Nice-to-have: IDL or binary serialization formats such as Protobuf, Avro, or FlatBuffers
  • Nice-to-have: Change data capture, such as Debezium or PeerDB, and PostgreSQL logical replication
  • Nice-to-have: OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT lifecycle, Keycloak, or Cognito
  • Nice-to-have: Agentic or AI-native developer tooling
  • Nice-to-have: Chaos engineering, game days, load testing, or fault-injection testing
  • Nice-to-have: Infrastructure as code with Argo CD or Terraform
  • Nice-to-have: Grafana observability stack, including Prometheus and Tempo
  • Nice-to-have: Fintech or regulated-domain experience
