- Own complex cross-cutting problems from initial design through production
- Partner with PayPal platform and security teams on shared standards, reusable infrastructure, and cross-organizational initiatives
- Lead architectural reviews and define engineering standards for scalability, reliability, and security
- Collaborate with Product, Legal, Compliance, and Security on KYC, AML, GDPR, and PCI requirements
- Identify and address authentication, compliance, and scalability risks proactively
- Own service performance and availability
- Participate in on-call rotations and support incident response
Requirements
What you’ll need- 8+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR any equivalent combination of education and experience
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s in computer science, or a related field of study, or equivalent experience
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, with significant time spent on backend platforms, authentication, or security-critical systems at scale
- Deep expertise in Python and API management, including OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, FIDO2/WebAuthn
- Proven track record of defining and shipping large-scale distributed systems
- Experience leading technical strategy across multiple teams or organizations
- Hands-on experience with backend systems at scale using Python, Java, Go, or similar
- Experience with AWS Cloud
- Security engineering fundamentals involving threat models, data handling, and attack surfaces
- Experience designing systems that meet KYC, AML, GDPR, or similar regulatory requirements
- Strong communication skills, including design documentation and executive reviews
- Expertise with distributed services and backend systems
- Expertise building services on public cloud, preferably AWS
- Experience managing infrastructure as code using Terraform
- Ability to participate in on-call rotations and provide incident support
