Key responsibilities & impact- Lead, grow and enable a team of forward-deployed engineers
- Hire engineers and support performance evaluations, career development and coaching
- Serve as the only and main engineering lead, with a career option to progress to CTO
- Own Vicoland’s technical direction and technology decisions
- Set architecture across the frontend-to-infrastructure stack
- Ensure systems are scalable, robust and maintainable
- Contribute features end-to-end by understanding business needs, coding and building prototypes, using AI to ship high-quality software
- Translate business needs into technical roadmaps with Business Development, Product and other stakeholders
- Prioritize scope and make trade-offs explicit
- Ensure team members work end-to-end across concept and design, development, QA, deployment and production monitoring
- Establish engineering standards and quality gates
- Improve AI development practices including context engineering, model selection, evaluation, tracing and observability
- Run architectural discussions, code reviews and retrospectives
- Build a culture of ownership, constructive challenge and continuous learning
- Advise the Chief Product Officer and business leadership on technology strategy, build-vs-buy decisions and team setup
Requirements
What you’ll need- Proven people leadership experience leading an engineering team, ideally 3+ engineers, including hiring, performance evaluations, career development and coaching
- Impactful technical contribution and continued enjoyment of writing code
- Deep hands-on experience across frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure/cloud
- Track record of architecting and shipping production-grade software
- Preferably experience with AI components including LLMs, embeddings, RAG pipelines, autonomous agents, PyTorch/TensorFlow
- Strong product sense and experience owning a feature or product area end-to-end
- Experience developing AI agents and integrating them into business workflows
- Current knowledge of AI-assisted software engineering tools, models and trends
- Excellent context engineering, including prompting; model selection; first-hand experience with Claude Code or Cursor
- Ability to roll AI-assisted engineering practices out across a team
- Ability to design evaluation sets, use LLM-as-judge or ground-truth data, and use tracing and observability tooling
- Ability to balance autonomy and alignment and drive work from idea to finished product
- Ability to challenge ideas and drive constructive discussions
- Humble leadership style that creates psychological safety and supports honest feedback
- Reside within ±3 hours of Central European Time
- Full professional proficiency in English at C2 level
- Full professional proficiency in German at C1 level
- Bonus: experience scaling engineering teams in startups or scale-ups
- Bonus: prior experience integrating AI into SaaS business workflows
- Bonus: familiarity with AI tooling ecosystem including agents, memory systems, vector databases and orchestration frameworks
